Our story

Wine has been produced on this land for almost 30 years. Located at the original Giesen Wines HQ in Burnham, just off the Main South Road (SH1) outside Christchurch, we have been Lone Goat Vineyard since we took ownership in 2007.

Who’s the goat?

The name of our vineyard was inspired by our mischievous goat, Ella, whose solitary nature earned her a special place in our hearts. Her successor, Zoe, is a calmer, more sociable character and the current guardian of the vines.

Our boutique range

We produce a stunning selection of wines, including chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir and delicious dessert wines, which can be found at a select number of quality wine merchants, ordered online or bought from our cellar door.

Life among the vines

We are a family vineyard, working with the rhythm of the seasons and using traditional methods to produce outstanding wines. Our children – now teenagers – have grown up among the vines, helping out, occasionally hindering, and chasing the menagerie of needy animals our family seems to attract.

Come and enjoy the space and taste

All of our wines are available for visitors to taste on site at our cellar door, where you can be sure of a warm welcome. We are lucky to have a lovely grassy barbecue-friendly space adjacent, complete with pergola, trees, flowers and native bush. As well as learning about and tasting our selection of handcrafted wines – and soaking up some Canterbury sunshine – you’ll likely meet some of the animal friends Zoe shares this space with. Our cellar door is open year-round, or by appointment.

We look forward to meeting you, and hope you enjoy discovering our wines.

Our timeline

Vines planted

The Giesen brothers planted many of the vines at our Burnham vineyard, which today provide us with a bountiful harvest from which we make many of our varietals. We feel privileged to have such history behind our vineyard.

We take ownership

We took a risk, jumped in and have been having an amazing adventure ever since. Our kids have grown up here, alongside the vines, and, while it's hard work year-round, we all love this rural, productive lifestyle.

More varietals introduced

Having come to really understand what the market wanted, and what our vines could produce, we extended our range to offer a fuller selection of wines, and launched the Winemaker's Series, which features wines with outstanding characteristics
